My thoughts:
After setting up the poll, the most chosen reply (7 each) is ‘Bad Taste’ and ‘Just Plain Scary’, 3 going for ‘Very Appropriate’ and 2 ‘Neutral’. That shows this ad somehow fail to deliver it’s message. The first time I saw it on Path, I thought it was another low-budget Malaysian/Indonesian horror movie poster. I simply scroll through with caring to look closer. And that is most of the reaction of some people I asked.
Maybe the mind behind this ad wants to be blunt and frank with no sugar-coating of the message. They might have envision that people will reach for their praying mat as soon as they see this ad, opening their heart to pray more. Good intentions of course but how would The Brunei Times know that this ad really works? How are they gonna gauge the effectiveness of this ad? Have they got a series of “scary-reminder” ad to follow up to this ad?
As a student of advertising, to me an ad is supposed to inspire and make one think about the message behind it. It has to appealing and captivating in a non-scary kinda way. And ad should have some other message besides the main image and tagline. Here is my free contribution that The Brunei Times can use;
I’m no brilliant creative advertising consultant (just an ordinary diploma holder) but those are just simple ideas that would probably be more captivating than splashing a raw image which some people thought was a trash bag at first glance!
In closing, let me just say I have no beef with The Brunei Times. I have friends working there and they’ve been kind enough to feature me too. I’m not condemning or trying to bring down anyone. This is my constructive criticism which I hope will be accepted in good faith. I applaud the initiative but I just think the idea should have been thought a little more deeper. Peace :)

Sacha Baron Cohen banned from Academy Awards over rumored Oscars stunt: report.
Serves him right I say. He is no doubt a funny guy but sometimes he is just too much and his jokes/pranks is rather tasteless and degrading. Well, I look forward to his reaction to this ban and see if he will attempt any kind of retaliation to it.
